Brownville Junction – John O. Leathers, 92, passed away peacefully Friday, April 17, 2020, at his home. He was born January 9, 1928, in Guilford, the son of Rena Leathers. John graduated from Guilford schools where he was known for being part of a team of talented basketball players. After high school he became a registered Maine Guide, flying clients in his Piper Cub plane to many remote areas to hunt or fish. John joined the Marine Corps as an infantry weapons Armorer. He was honorably discharged on December 12, 1952. He later became a warden with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. John was a man who loved his job and the outdoors, reinforcing the Maine laws to protect its’ wildlife. He was extremely well read and was able to tell many facts about outdoor life in Maine. Also known for his talent for wood working, he made many gifts, from canoes and snowshoes to gun cabinets. John was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor Leathers, and his son, David Leathers. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Hogan and her husband, Bob, of Sebec; two sons, John K. Leathers of Newburgh, and Rick Leathers and his wife, Gail, of Medford; five grandchildren, Justin Hogan of Gorham, John Brady Hogan of Portland, Tucker Leathers of Medford, John O. Leathers of Cushing, and Sara-Kate Leathers of Swanville; and two great-grandchildren, Richard Palmer III and Sierra Leathers. John will be remembered by many, many friends and acquaintances. A graveside memorial service will be held at the Pine Tree Cemetery, Brownville Junction, at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
