Obituary of Edwin Bruce Herring
DOVER-FOXCROFT Edwin "Ed" Bruce Herring, 73, passed away peacefully October 27, 2018. He was born May 16, 1945, in Leesburg, Virginia, the son of Sherwood Harvey and Anna Fae Herring. He grew up in Maryland and summered in Maine during his childhood, where he developed a lasting love of this state.
After a year in college, Ed volunteered for service in the US Navy and served in Naval Intelligence flying in the EC-121 naval surveillance plane in Vietnam. After returning from the war, he completed his degree in Criminology and Sociology at the University of Maryland. Ed lived in Silver Spring, Maryland with his wife Ruby and his growing family of four daughters until 1994, when they moved to Dover-Foxcroft.
Ed loved the history of the early United States and was particularly fond of Colonial Williamsburg. He had a strong interest in Bluegrass and Irish music and was an avid reader and collector of mystery novels. Ed enjoyed going for Saturday drives through the Maine countryside and vacationing in Bar Harbor with his family, with whom he loved to joke.
Ed is survived by his wife, Ruby Herring; four daughters, Lydia Herring-Harrington and her husband Matthew, Emily Herring, Amanda D'Alessandro and her husband Frank, and Molly Herring; his grandson Mason D'Alessandro; two siblings, Linda Herring and Cathleen Otto; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
