Obituary of Mary Susan McKeil
Greenville Junction – Mary Susan “Sue” Chase McKeil, 76, of Greenville Junction, passed away on March 8, 2017, at C. A. Dean Memorial Hospital, Greenville, after a brief resurgence of melanoma.
Born in Portsmouth, NH to Lester C. and Geraldine Foster Chase, Sue attended Traip Academy in Kittery where she grew up. At age 15 she won a state public speaking contest. By her senior year she had refined her talents to such a level that her classmates voted her Class Clown of the graduating class of 1959. She would continue to hone her comedic chops throughout her adult life.
While attending the University of Maine, where she was majoring in “finding a husband”, she was persuaded to go on a blind date with the man who was to become the love of her life, Richard “Duke” McKeil. They married on June 17, 1962. Sue always said the best thing Duke did for her was to bring her to Greenville. Apparently, having children was a close second. Sue adopted Duke’s hometown as her own, enthusiastically joining him in various shenanigans, whether they be at the Mount Kineo Hotel or at the Long Branch Saloon. They enjoyed an active social life, including camping trips to Big Duck Cove with the Hilton, Theriault and Worster families.
After graduating from U Maine with a teaching degree, Sue began a long and impactful career as an educator. After a brief stint teaching first grade in Old Town, she landed a position as a junior high Social Studies and English teacher at Shaw Junior High School in Gorham, where she would remain for thirty years. Upon retirement, she moved with Duke to Greenville where she worked as a substitute teacher for ten years. Sue loved her students and they LOVED her back. She was a very compassionate teacher and always tried to help the underdog. She had a soft spot for students who had a rough home life. It is rare for her children to go anywhere without being stopped by former students to ask how Mrs. McKeil is or tell a kind story about her.
Sue will be remembered as the life of the party. She was fond of the spotlight and was known to occasionally embellish a detail here and there. She loved to entertain, but might decide to turn in before the party was over leaving her guests to wrap up without her. She was fierce in her devotion to family and friends and could always be counted on to support them in times of need.
Sue was the best mother and the staunchest supporter of her children. She was behind her children 100%. They never did anything wrong in her eyes and she supported them through broken marriages, addiction and illness. She attended every event they participated in and wore every macaroni necklace her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren made her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Duke, in 2011, and she missed him dearly. She is survived by her children, Liz McKeil of Greenville; Kelly McKeil and Richard McKeil of Greenville Junction; brother, Thomas Chase and his wife, Paula, of North Andover, MA, niece, Emily Chase Coleman and nephew, John Chase; sister, Sara Chase Hufnagle and her husband, Doug, niece, Amy Mackos and nephews, David Hufnagle and Michael Hufnagle; nephew, Dan Martin; grandchildren, Ashley Williams and husband, John Williams, Maxwell Bangs and husband, Chris Bangs, Kylie Bangs, Brendan Hoban, Keegan Cannell and Owen Cannell; and great-grandchildren, Ethan Hethcoat and Cassidy, Joel and Meadow Williams. She was eagerly anticipating the birth of her newest great granddaughter due on March 15. She was predeceased by her two best friends, Jo Durham Huff and Martha Mills. She will be greatly missed by her cats, Porkchop and Blackie.
There will be no funeral service. The family is planning a memorial service aboard the Steamboat Katahdin on July 9, 2017. All are welcome. There will be a private burial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to either Moosehead Marine Museum, PO Box 1151, Greenville, ME 04441, or to NREC Moosehead, PO Box 1329, Greenville, ME 04441.
