Obituary of Joseph W. Grant Jr.

Sangerville – Joseph W. Grant Jr., 92, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2023, at Dexter Healthcare in Dexter. He was born August 26, 1930, in Abbot, the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Eva (Hamel) Grant. Joe was known for his hard work and dedication. He was the oldest of 8 children. He left high school early to help make ends meet for his family. In 1952, he joined the Army where he was stationed in Alaska until honorably discharged in 1954. Joe then married Gloria Campbell in 1956. He cut wood for Clyde Thomas and then Richard Thomas before retiring in 1992. After retirement, Joe helped Gloria at the Village Restaurant that they purchased in 1987. He was a 60-year member of the Stott Flanders Post of 165 in Sangerville, where he served as a commander for many years. Joe is survived by two daughters, Susan Weltman of Norwood, MA, and Cinthia Hoak and husband, John, of Cambridge; five grandchildren, Brooke Hodgdon and husband, Pete, of Naples, Joseph Weltman and significant other, Caitlin Trethewey, of Dedham, MA, Philip Weltman and wife, Emily, of Roslindale, MA, Sarah Hanscome and husband, Logan, of Dover-Foxcroft, and Jeffrey Hoak of Bangor; five great-grandchildren, Darian, Callie, Patrick, Addalyn, and Grant; four sisters, Marjorie Braley of Sangerville, Mary Curtis of Sangerville, Marilyn Braley of Machias, and Linda Goodridge of Sangerville, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of over 60 years, Gloria Grant; son-in-law, Carl Weltman; three brothers, Guy Grant, Alfred Grant, and Edward Grant; sisters-in-law, Judy Grant, and Janice Grant; brothers-in-law, Harold Goodridge, Charles Braley, Roger Curtis, and Clifford Braley. The family would like to express a special thank you to Jinx and Gary Hart, Pat Bush, and Gail Raye who made it possible for Joe to live independently at home for so many years. Visitations for family and friends will be held 5-7 PM Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A graveside service with military honors will be held 10 AM Saturday, June 10, at the Village Cemetery, Sangerville, In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sangerville Historical Society: P.O.
