Obituary of Richard H. "Dick" Millett

Richard H. “Dick” Millett went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Saturday October 22, 2022. Dick was born April 18, 1935, in Waterford, Maine to Marguerite H. and Howard S. Millett. He graduated from Carmel High School in 1952, and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine Orono in 1956. He worked in agriculture for nine years before he went on to complete his master's degree from the University of Wyoming in 1970. In 1963, Dick married Thelma M. (Clark) Peters. By 1964, they had moved to Guilford where Dick began his teaching career at Piscataquis Community High School. After teaching in Guilford for 14 years, they moved to Waterford where he taught for 11 years at Jay High School. They returned to Guilford in 1987, where he would finish his teaching career at Foxcroft Academy in 1997. In total, he taught physics for 33 years and was able to initiate “hands on physics” classes at each school. After retiring from teaching, he continued to work. He enjoyed building and constructing timber frame homes which were often completed in partnership with his stepson, Gerald Peters, whom he considered to be his best friend. He enjoyed traveling whether it was through school or with Thelma or family. He traveled to Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany as well as numerous trips throughout the United States and Canada. Dick was very involved in his community. He was a member of the Masons beginning in 1958 and served on local school boards throughout his teaching career. Dick and Thelma were active in the Garland Community Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for 11 years. Dick was predeceased by his wife, Thelma M. Millett, and a grandson, Justin Roy. He is survived by four brothers, Sawin Millett; Add Millett and his wife Sylvia; David Millett and his wife Cheryl; and Mark Millett and Maggie. He is also survived by a daughter, Linda and her husband, James Simones; a son, Tom Millett; twin daughters, Roxanne Millett, and Rosanne and her husband, Robert Mann; as well as stepchildren, Gerald and his wife, Sheril Peters; Paula and her husband, Glen Sanders; Cathy and her husband, Patrick Bilodeau; Juanita and her husband, Dennis Jones; and Peggy and her husband, Gilman Glover; and 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held 11AM Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Garland Community Baptist Church in Garland, Maine. After the service a reception will be held at the church. Committal will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Guilford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Garland Community Baptist Church, 26 Oliver Hill Road, PO Box 76, Garland, ME 04939.
