Obituary of Avis Archer Spear
Dover-Foxcroft - Avis Archer Spear, 108, passed away on August 22, 2021, after a brief illness.
Avis eternally looked for the light and the laughter. When she was asked what was her secret for a long life, she would likely answer with a twinkle in her eye. “I can't tell you... It's a secret!" Or else, “Who told you I was old! Why, I’m only 108…that isn’t old, is it?”
Living such a long life, Avis grieved the loss of each member of her immediate family, while remembering them dearly. Avis outlived all eleven siblings; her husband of 69 years, Newbert Percy Spear; and their three sons, Byron (Lynchburg, VA), Dale (Milo, ME) and Darrell (and wife, Nina, also deceased, Melbourne FL).
Avis will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters-in-law, Faye Spear, Lynchburg, VA (wife of Byron) and Lee Spear, Old Town, ME (wife of Dale), along with eight grandchildren, Bert (Karla) Spear (Kennewick WA), Doug (Cindy) Spear (Lynchburg, VA), Dale Spear (New Bern, NC) , Barry Spear (Milbrook, AL), Roger Spear (Melbourne, FL), Judi (Warren) Coleman (Harrisonburg, VA), Shelly Hamilton (Alton, ME), and Terri (Carmine) Matarazzo (Melbourne, FL). In addition, she leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren. Niece, Norma Johnson (Las Vegas, NV) also survives her.
Avis had countless friends, even into her later years. She had frequent visitors in her home at Pleasant Meadows in Dover-Foxcroft where she was loved by staff and residents alike, many whom would visit her long after they moved onto other jobs; or after their family members had passed. Her keen mind stayed with her until the end, and though she lived to be 108, somehow it still doesn’t feel long enough to those she left behind.
The family is very grateful to Avis’ friends and to the staff at Pleasant Meadows and to the Hospice workers who lovingly cared for our grandmother, aunt and mother-in-law for these many years, and in particular, during her final season of life.
There will be no services. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Pleasant Meadow Estates, 137 Park Street, Dover-Foxcroft 04426. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
