Harford’s Point TWP – Duane Richard Lander, 79, passed away May 2, 2021, at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. He was born August15, 1941, in Hartland, ME, the son of Maurice J. and Charlotte (Haley) Lander. Duane grew up in Cambridge and graduated from Guilford High School, Class of 1958. He attended Wentworth Institute of Technology earning a degree in civil engineering. The U.S Army drafted him where he served honorably for three years, being discharged in August 1966. He had many great memories from his time working with the photogrammetry survey team in Iran mapping the mountains between Iran and Russia. After serving, Duane attended business school at the Bryant and Stratton School and worked for Haley Construction Co.  While doing concrete work for Haley’s to install the chairlift to the top of Squaw Mountain, Duane was offered the Mountain Operations Manager position. Duane held this position through the resort ownership by Scott Paper Company. When the State of Maine took over the mountain, Duane formed a leasing company and became General Manager of the mountain for the next 20 years. During his time at the mountain and after his career there, Duane owned and operated D.R. Lander Construction and Moosehead Country Exxon. Duane was a very active member of the Moosehead community. Being an avid pilot, Duane, along with other bush pilots from the Greenville area, was a founding member of the International Sea Plane Fly-In. He was a longtime director of the Moosehead Marine Museum and assisted with the restoration of the Katahdin in the late 1970’s. He proudly represented the area in the State of Maine Legislature, House of Representatives from 1984-1986.Those who knew Duane, appreciated that he was very passionate about politics and active in the Piscataquis County Republican Committee, and served as a national delegate. Duane was an active member of the American Legion Post #94. Duane is survived by his three children, Jennifer Aucoin and her husband, Charlie; Jonathan Lander and his wife, Jennifer (DelMonaco); and Jason Lander and his wife, Julie Gregg; seven grandchildren, Kahla Davis and her husband, Dusty, Cole Aucoin and his fiancée, Kaylee Warman, Charlotte Aucoin, Jack and Brynne Lander, and Ethan and Emma Lander; two brothers, Philip Lander and his wife, Marilyn, and Galen Lander and his wife, Deanna; former wife and mother of his children, Donna Moreland; long-time personal friend, Robert “Bo” Howard; and an aunt, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Duane was predeceased by his parents, Maurice J. and Charlotte (Haley)Lander; nephew, Scott Philip Lander; and niece, Marcia Beth Lander. Visitations will be held 5-7PM Thursday, May 6, 2021, at the Lary Funeral Home Greenville Chapel in the Greenville Masonic Lodge, located at 281Pritham Avenue. A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held 2PMFriday, May 7, 2021, at the family lot in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Cambridge, with Pastor Steve Nute officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Moosehead Marine Museum, P.O. Box 1151, Greenville, ME 04441 and the American Legion Scholarship Fund, American Legion Post #94, P.O.
