I recently learned of Dr. Smith’s passing and was heartened to see that he lived a long life to enjoy many years with his family. I lived across the street from the Smith family, having moved to Lexington Ave in the late 60’s as a 2nd grader about the same time the Smith family moved in. I spent many of my childhood days with my very close friend, Lorne Jr., as well as with Robert, Katherine and Andrew. I have many fond memories of Playing, swimming, boating and Patriots games courtesy of Dr. and Mrs. Smith’s kind invitations. As kids, we would pile into the van and sing Carpenters songs as we made our way to the canoe club. Dr. Smith was A wonderful neighbor and a kind man who was always there for his family and neighbors. He had a calm about him that would make any kid feel welcome. I am certain he brought his calm, steady hand to his professional life as well. I remember vacationing in Boothbay Harbor, Maine as a boy thanks to the Dr.s’ recommendation to my own dad who is still going strong at 90 himself. I left Holyoke in 1980 to attend college in Boston and lost track of the entire Smith family over the years. I was sad to hear of The Dr.’s passing, and hope all in the family are doing well and cherishing his memory. I would be happy to hear from Lorne Jr. And reconnect! Warmly, Mark Fitzpatrick. My experience in knowing Dr. Smith is from the perspective of a daughter whose Dad was in need of an emergent vascular procedure and whose Mom at the time, was a patient in the same hospital. The obvious concern for his critically ill patient did not deter his focus or compassion for the patient's family. Although time was of the essence, Dr. Smith took the time to meet with my Mom and me in her hospital room, explaining what needed to be done, answered our questions, and assured us he would see to it, we were updated during the estimated 5-6 hour procedure, and we were. It was at a late hour when the surgery was over, but Dr. stopped into Mom’s hospital room to assure us, all went well and again asked if there were any questions. As a retired nurse, it was an extreme rarity when I witnessed both skill and true compassion in a surgeon. Dr. Smith was one of those few. He worked tirelessly for his patients and their families were just as important to him. When I was his patient and a critical complication arose, a call was put in and when he came into my hospital room, he was in a tux! The engagement he was attending could wait, his patient needed him. Dr. Smith was a man who most likely would feel ill at ease in hearing others speak of his attributes. His work was about those he served, his patients; in making a positive difference in medicine, a profession he loved dearly. One of the best is no longer. Those whose path crossed with his, whether on a personal or professional level are better for it. Well done, Dr. Smith, well done! My sincere condolences to his family.

My working in the Holyoke Hospital ER as a full-time ER doc overlapped 20 years with Lorne's service there. In the early 1970s, the Midwest had been the birthplace of Emergency Medicine as a specialty. Other regions of the US retained the model of surgeons controlling the ER as their "turf." New England hospitals were especially slow to transition to viewing EM as a full-time specialty. Lorne quickly envisioned the future of EM and fully supported the fledgling group of ER docs at HH who staffed the ER full-time. When necessary, he ran interference and persuaded the administration and other medical departments to cede control of the ER to the ER docs. In short, he respected us as fellow board-certified specialists.
We ER docs enjoyed consulting with Lorne when he was on call or even if we couldn't quickly find the on-call surgeon. He made himself available and put the patient before any personal inconvenience. I recall his coming into the hospital at 6:30 a.m. for a man with a life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysm. It was in the midst of a blizzard so bad the ambulances weren't even running but Lorne somehow got there and operated. As always, he radiated the feeling that serving the public at any hour of the day or night was a privilege.
Lorne was deeply respected by all for his integrity, competence and selfless professionalism. He served as a worthy role model for us younger docs. What a privilege it was to know and work with him those 20 years. David Nielsen

Lorne Smith was one of the Last Lions of the medical staff at Holyoke Medical Center. After a short time in practice, I came to realize that he was one of the two senior medical staff who I would never want to disappoint. He was kind, compassionate, talented, and demanding in the best of traditions. A connection with the greater chapter of the story Holyoke Hospital has passed.
Please accept my condolences at your loss.
Very Sincerely,
Garry Bombardier, MD

Dr. Lorne Smith was an exceptionally talented and very compassionate general and vascular surgeon with whom I had the privilege of working with as a partner and in later years in our independent practices. We worked closely with each other and shared call coverage until he retired. He was also a very dear friend and we shared many wonderful experiences together, especially in our boating days. He leaves me with many wonderful memories. He will be missed. My deepest condolences to his wonderful family.
