My heart is sad but I know that Joe is now happy again. I was so glad that I spent time with him again this summer visiting while I vacationed at our camp up the lake and had Joe to a fantastic Steak dinner there as well... spent the evening reminiscing about the old days with Bill Waterhouse (my father in-law and all the old timers. Joe really enjoyed himself that evening.. He was a sweetheart and I loved him lots.
I had just spoken with him about a week and a half before he passed and knew he was going to be turning 93! What a guy! He will be so missed by so many.

Joe was my favorite cousin. I only made the trip to Maine a half dozen times, but Joe was an integral part of my memories there. He was quick-witted and warm-hearted.
One day, he took my daughter and me out on his boat to search for a place that I remembered from my first visit to Sebec Lake in 1955. Back then, my grandfather, Herbert Hayford, took me to an inlet with huge smooth boulders. They were flat and warm and perfect for lying on. As a child, it was the most magical place I’d ever seen. Anyway, half a century later, Joe readily offered to help me locate it. He drove us all over the lake trying to find the spot. Strangely, I can’t recall if we ever found the exact place my eight-year-old eyes fell in love with, but I remember very clearly how determined and patient Joe was in the search for it. If it was important to me, then it was important to him.
That was a kindness that will stay with me forever.
In the last dozen years, most of our visiting was by phone. He had a great, welcoming voice that I can still hear in my head and in my heart. He brightened my life.
My sincere sympathy to Stephen & Colleen, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joe was a good man who will be sorely missed.

To Joe's family, please accept my sincerest condolences. I had known Joe for many years. He and Jeanette were friends of my parents, both gone now for several years. His sister, Betty, lived next door to my parents when they first lived at Thayer Parkway, and that's when I really got to know Joe. The fact that he was a Yankee fan was a thorn in my side, as I am a diehard Red Sox fan. He and I had many talks, all friendly, of course, about baseball and our teams over the years. I always looked forward to our chats when we ran into each other around town. He never failed to make me smile. Joe was such a friendly man with a quick wit, and he will be missed in our community.

Dear Stephen, Colleen, and family,
Joe was a cherished friend and neighbor to our family (the Cudmores, the Fowlers, and the Dows) for more than 50 years. Joe and Jeanette watched us come and go and watched us grow next door to them on Sebec Lake. He will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
