Obituary of Joyce Ethel Race

Newport,NH- Joyce Ethel (McDonald) Race, 89, peacefully passed away on May 26, 2018, at her home in Newport, NH.  She was born to the late Frank and Virginia (Bragdon) McDonald on July 10, 1928, in Dover-Foxcroft, ME.  Following high school in Sangerville, ME, Joyce studied business at Husson College.  Joyce married Roger A. Race in 1948. Joyce was a homemaker for the majority of her working years, but also was employed as a Teacher’s Aide at Peru Central Schools in Peru, NY, and at the BOCES School in Plattsburgh, NY.  She enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, traveling and working with children.  Joyce enjoyed spending time with Roger at the camp her father built on Piper Pond as well as camping with their travel trailer in other parts of the US.   When Roger passed away prematurely, Joyce spent most of her subsequent years living with her youngest daughter, Sandra.  Joyce was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. 

She is survived by: her two daughters (Barbara VanHouten (Bruce) and  Sandra Kitchen); her son (Kenneth Race (Sandy)); 4 grandchildren (Alan Domingue (Heather), Aaron Domingue (Tanya), Erin Vanderwall (Adam), and Thomas Race (Jennifer)); 5 great-grandchildren (Skyler Race, Emmalynn Race, Madeline Vanderwall, Martin Domingue, and Ellie Domingue); and 5 nephews.  Joyce was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Roger Race (1989); her brother, Marvin McDonald; and her son-in-law, Terry Kitchen.

Joyce’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and doctors Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital and a special thank you to the Bayada Hospice nurses and staff for their loving care. 

A graveside funeral service will be held 2PM Sunday, June 3, 2018, at the Village Cemetery, Sangerville,ME. If desired, donations in memory of Joyce may be made to the charity of your choice or to your local hospice provider.  Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Guilford, ME.
