Obituary of Elizabeth H. Harvey

Dover-Foxcroft - Elizabeth (Hebel) Harvey, 91, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior with family by her side on March 21, 2018, three days short of her 92^nd birthday, in Bangor. Betty was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many. She was a highly respected member of her community of Dover-Foxcroft.

Betty was born in Germany, March 24, 1926, to Gus and Pauline Hebel and grew up in Brewer, Maine, with two brothers, Richard and Carl and one sister, Helen. Her parents owned and operated the Brewer Flower Shop. Upon graduating from Brewer High School in 1943, she studied nursing at the University of Maine.

On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, she married Sheldon “Ted” Harvey in San Bruno, California just days prior to his first Naval deployment to Okinawa during WWII. Betty’s adult life was spent in Dover-Foxcroft where she relished her role as wife, mother and homemaker. She and Ted were active members in the Congregational Church for many years.  She enjoyed membership in the Federated Women’s and Miosac Clubs and selflessly gave her time for many years as the volunteer manager of the Thayer Parkway Apartments for the elderly.

In 1959, Betty began working for Piscataquis Savings Bank as a teller. She was later promoted to Treasurer, pioneering as one of only three female bank officers in the state of Maine at the time. Piscataquis Savings Bank later merged with Bangor Savings where she remained in management until she retired in 1988. Betty served for many years on the Board of Trustees at Foxcroft Academy and remained as an honorary trustee until her death. She was one of FA’s greatest sports fans right up until a few months before she died.

Wherever she called home throughout her life, Betty loved her neighbors and they loved her. Her favorite indoor pastimes included sewing and knitting. More than anything she loved to spend time outdoors with Ted and her family at ‘camp’ on Sebec Lake. Her favorite activities included swimming in the summer, ice skating and skiing in the winter, keeping food on the table and the jar filled with whoopee pies, playing cards with funny hats, listening to the loons and tending to her grandchildren’s every need.

Betty was pre-deceased by her husband Ted in 2003 and was the last of her generation on both sides of her family.  She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Pullen, son-in-law, Larry Pullen of Turner, Maine; son, Tom Harvey and daughter-in-law, Karen Harvey of Marblehead, Massachusetts; seven grandchildren: Brandon Pullen (wife Jennifer) of San Tan Valley, Arizona; Michael Laurence Pullen (wife Tatiana) of Dania Beach, Florida; Ian Pullen, (wife Amelia), of Minot, Maine; Emily Harvey Brechner (husband Steve), of Cave Creek, Arizona; Adam Harvey (wife Megan) of Merrimack, New Hampshire; Hadley Gallagher (husband Rich) of Rye, New York; Ben Breed of Boston, Massachusetts; twelve great-grandchildren; four nephews; six nieces; many grand nephews and nieces.

A Life Celebration Open House for family and friends will be held 4-7p.m. Friday, June 1, 2018, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
