I met Hartley in Florida when he lived closer to me and we engaged in some left-wing pinko commie political activities protesting the bane of our existence: Republiklans.
We carried on like I was his younger brother and argued about NE sports versus the world. Like Hartley, my wife and parents were also public school educators and I toiled at a UW System campus for 30+ years. So, we were kindred spirits in spite of differences of opinion about athletics. What great fun for both of us to have such willing foils.
I know he was thrilled to be able to stay in Tampa/St. Pete when Lisa moved there to carry on her career. And, his trips to the Coast. Not to mention visitations with Gary.
Hartley was, as they say, old-school. And, in the field of education, people like him are coming to be more rare and not for any good reason.
I will to continue to work to put people like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren back in office where they can undo the truly evil things currently being done. And, I will be motivated by his memory and the work he did to try to make a better world.
