I just read of Ruth's passing in the newspaper. Anyone reading this knows what an amazing human being she was. I had the privilege of having been her friend for the past 13 years. We were neighbors at first. My husband and I lived in the house by the wine cellar, that was the home of three girls who had stayed with Ruth and Martin years ago. I clearly remember the beautiful fall day when I first met Ruth. She was out raking, and I was walking my two dogs at the time. I loved her immediately, and my dogs did as well. Whenever we went for walks they headed in the direction of French road, and ever time they ran lose I would be sure to find them sitting happily and contentedly on the porch with Ruth. I had three daughters over the years, and irregularly, even after we moved 5 miles away we would visit Ruth as often as our busy schedule would allow, and she always remembered the girls names, and often had treats for them. She was our first stop on Halloween every year. I value very much the time my daughters and I were able to be in her presence and to witness her strength, humor, beauty, generosity, optimism, and pure contentment for life. She always impressed me with her intellect, her physical vigor, and her enthusiasm for every day of her life. She use to flirt with my husband, and would never admit her age to us. Her love of nature and of the animals and birds that she fed and rescued over the years was balanced by a realism about the nature of life and death, in the rat poison she left out for the skunks and the rifle she kept by her side on the porch to shoot pigeons with. She was the perfect example to me of how an open light heart may be the secret to longevity. I can not say enough about this woman. She will forever be a role model to me. One of the last of her kind. Rest in peace lovely Ruth.

I will really miss Ruth French. I loved visiting her and she was super nice. My mom met her a long time ago. A lot of times we went to her house she had vanilla pretzels for us. I was just a baby when I first went to her house. I will really miss her.

A few years ago I was blessed to return to my roots. I was simply taking my Doug on a journey down memory lane. Out of the blue just prior to our trip a woman found me on Facebook and said - did you know your "Great Aunt" was still living in the family home - I did not. My own mom had passed a few months earlier and I truly was feeling overwhelmed thinking now I was the oldest - what do I do now... We went and visited with Ruth for several hours - she was 93 years old. As we approached the house she stirred from her nap and gathered her glasses - looked staight at me and said I know you - you are Sara. I started to cry - I could barely remember meeting this woman when I was a child but she knew me just from a moments glance. We chatted for a few hours, Doug helped her with her stove and off we went. I learned this morning Ruth passed a few short days ago. What a strange feeling this is - in just a few moments meeting I realized what an amazing hot shit lady this Maine woman was - I can only hope I am able to share her strength to my own daughter - Peace be with you Aunt Ruth, the angels have truly received your blessings.

Ruth was a neighbor for years. You could almost set your clock by her when she made her way to town for her outttings with her friends in town. If we were outside, she would wave or toot her horn as she went by. Always a smile on her face. In years past, we pastured dry cows in her fields as they awaited their calves to be born. She loved to watch them and was the best "herdsman".... if one calved or was having trouble she knew it and let us know. We will miss her here on Bear Hill Road.
