DOVER-FOXCROFT – Major John Patrick Cameron (Ret. USAF) passed away peacefully on June 29, 2017, at Pleasant Meadows in Dover-Foxcroft. He was born November 29, 1929 in Needham, Massachusetts to Eleanor McGrath and James Cameron. He grew up in a boisterous household with his nine siblings.

John was known as Pat. He never gave up on being known as a true Maine resident, saying he should qualify, simply because he loved it so deeply. Pat forever held his patriotism true to his heart and was proud of having served his country well. He was a gentleman and great story teller with a delightful humor. Pat was often found on local golf courses and, often times with friends, traveling to other courses to enjoy the game he loved so much.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 40 years, Marilyn Mayhew Cameron whom he married on October 29, 1976; his daughters and sons-in-law, Diane Cameron and Joseph Horgan of Maryland, and Rachel and Raymond Wright of Indiana. His two step-daughters, Julie and husband Paul Wiegleb, and Lynne Libby and her partner Eugene Bergeron quickly became his Maine family and grew to be extremely connected.

Pat was extremely proud of his grandchildren, Rebecca Smoot, Sophie Cameron, Heather Wright, twins Erica and Cameron Wright. He supported their goals in achieving an excellent education. He is also survived by his brother, Colonel William Cameron (Ret. USAF), and Laurette Cameron, mother of his children.  He was predeceased by eight siblings. He was also predeceased by his daughter Maureen Cameron of whom always stayed alive in the hearts of the family.

Pat was a high school history teacher, a deputy with the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Dept. and member of the Chadbourne-Merrill American Legion. He volunteered for Meals For Me, Literacy Volunteers, and enjoyed time spent with the Men's Breakfast Group at the United Methodist Church where he attended services with Marilyn. He contributed generously to numerous charitable organizations.

A memorial service with military honors will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at the United Methodist Church of Dover-Foxcroft, with Rev. Ann Beach officiating.  A reception will follow in Harter Hall. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft. Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
