Obituary of Patricia Ann Baker-Reed

Patricia Ann Baker – Reed, “Patty” January 25, 1943 – November 11, 2024 Beloved Daughter, Wife, Mother and Friend Patty Reed passed away at age 81, in hospice care at Northern Lights Mayo Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine due to complications following emergency surgery. She was the daughter of Louis R. Baker and Ann Marie Schiele-Baker of Mulino, Oregon. Patty was born in Eugene, Oregon. She was an only child. Patty’s mother was very close knit to her three sisters and one brother and Patty grew up close to her cousins. Patty married Lonnie K. Reed in 1963 and began having children the following year and they grew their family to 12 children. Patty’s parents were very supportive in numerous ways to help with all their grandchildren. Patty was supportive to her husband by staying home to raise the children while Lonnie worked full-time at the Molalla lumber mill as a welder. They lived most of their child rearing years in Colton, Oregon on their two acres of land. Every year Patty planted a large family garden and she always had rose bushes as roses were her favorite flower. She also went with him to work on his parent’s farm, mostly at harvest time, until she needed to stay home with the younger children, but she still got up early to make everyone breakfast and pack all the lunches. Patty & her husband were resourceful and taught their kids how they could help in different areas and tried to get everyone to pitch in with many things such as diaper changing, chores, gardening, canning, fishing, hunting, cooking, baking, fixing cars, building fires, using tools, using firearms, sewing or whatever needed to be done. After most of the kids were moved out of the home Patty volunteered at Gleaners food bank for several years. She wanted to help other families that struggled as she knew what it was like to have children and struggle financially. During times of harvest bounty, she shared with family and friends to thank everyone who supported her during her times of struggle. She had encouraged clients and fellow volunteers to grow gardens as her parents and herself did and her husband did for his parents. Everyone traded vegetables and fruits at harvest season from the three gardens. Patty and Lonnie moved to Bandon by the Sea, Oregon and operated a business called “Cherries, Berries and More,” where they grew and sold fresh quality produce. Plus, having been so close to the ocean they were blessed with fresh catches that her husband brought home often for dinners. A few of their kids were still living in the home with them. When she was an empty nester and a widow living in a retirement community, she made several long-lasting friendships. She also started writing letters in a Pen-Pal letter exchange group and she made some close friends through that experience too. She spent a lot more time to crochet blankets, and she also made baby blankets with matching beanies and mittens, and she made scarves for everyone. In times of reflection, Patty had said many times she loved her life in Bandon and missed all of that experience. During the last 10 years, in her 70s, she lived with her daughter Rebecca S. Koerperich and her son-in-law Jeremy Koerperich. They provided a warm loving home for Patty in Enterprise Oregon and Patty traveled along with them when they moved to Cambridge Maine just over three years ago. Patty kept in touch with family on the phone and sometimes video chats. She spoke of how beautiful it was in Maine and she was happy they were by an ocean. She liked sitting by the ocean on nice weather days. Jeremy watched shark shows on T.V. with Patty, and Rebecca watched Hallmark movies with her mom as they both especially loved watching Christmas movies. Together, they all three watched the cooking and baking competitions. Patty would help when Rebecca & Jeremy would go out to garden. Rebecca and her mom joined a Christmas Card exchange with people from all around the world and they had fun sending and receiving all the cards. They went on car rides together. They all loved to go get milk shakes and then drive around to look at Christmas decorations. Patty’s seat in the car will be empty this year and she will be missed. Patty was cremated and her ashes will be put to rest and a memorial is being planned, and the details are to be announced. Patty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son Lonnie D. Reed. Patty is survived by 11 of her children: April L. Sumpter, Herman K. Reed, Kelley P. Reed, Sheryl C. Reed, Darlene K. Nolte, Nancy L. Reed-Strutz, Mathew S. Reed & Wife Alicia Reed, Charlotte Gant & Husband Aron Gant, Valarie M. Reed, Mary J. Reed-Warren, and Husband Edward Warren, Rebecca S. Reed-Koerperich & Husband Jeremy Koerperich and 23 Great Grandchildren and many cousins.
