Obituary of Diane (Davis) Reynolds
Ellsworth - Diane (Davis) Reynolds, 82, passed away peacefully Nov. 2, 2024 at her Branch Lake home in Ellsworth with her family by her side after a short battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 12, 1941 in Milo, Maine the daughter of Iris and Kenneth Davis.
Diane was a graduate of the University of Maine, Class of 1964, and Milo High School. She was Salutatorian of her graduating high school class and a forward on the girls basketball team, which won a state class championship three consecutive years. In college, she was an honor student, a UMO cheerleader and member of Tri-Delta Sorority. An elementary public school teacher for many years, Diane taught in Barrington, RI and Hampden and Newburgh, Maine. In the fall of 1964, she married her fiance, Navy Ensign V. Paul Reynolds in Newport, RI. The newlyweds made their home at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Oceana, VA until 1967 when they returned to Maine to raise their family.
She is survived by Paul, her husband of 60 years and three children: W. Scott Reynolds and his wife, Karen; Suzie Pauchey and her husband, Jacques; and Joshua Reynolds and his wife, Rebecca. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Zebulon Reynolds and Lora Scott; Paul Henri and Mary Pauchey; and Dana and Eli Reynolds; two great grandchildren: Davyn Reynolds and Kennith Carson; her beloved sister, Jannifer Stanchfield and her husband, Jack; her sister-in-law, Christine Force; and many nieces and nephews.
An outdoorswoman by nature, some of her best childhood memories were the times spent at her folks’ camp at Schoodic Lake and a summer cottage at Sandy Point, Maine. She was an avid birdwatcher and outdoor photographer, loved long walks, gardening, wild berry picking, and kayaking with friends at Branch Lake. Following her teaching career, she took up hunting and fishing with her husband and the couple camped, hunted and fished Maine, Maryland, Florida, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado and Labrador.
For nearly two decades, Di and Paul wintered in the Florida Keys. She loved spending time with her friends and family at Founders Park in Islamorada and never got enough of the lingering sunsets across the Florida Gulf, tennis matches and beach yoga.
Diane was a director of Maine’s Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) program and taught fly casting. She was also a longtime board director of the New England Outdoor Writers Association (NEOWA). Her wildlife photography won a number of First Place awards in NEOWA’s New England photography competition. She was also a director of Northwoods Publishing Group, which owns Northwoods Sporting Journal, a New England hunting and fishing monthly magazine.
She was a fierce competitor, especially with her husband, when it came to her favorite games, which she never got enough of: cribbage, seven-card rummy and Scrabble. In later years, she spent hours assembling puzzles when she wasn’t cooking up her favorite dishes for the family, whose frequent visits always made her day. She loved reading and attending the monthly meetings of the Branch Lake Book Club and watching the Boston Red Sox.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, her love and pride in her family was foremost in her life. For her husband Paul, she was an editor, a valued “sounding board” for his publishing business and a constant outdoor companion who shared her mate’s love of camping, hunting and fishing. A few years ago, she and Paul spent the fall traveling about the West and Southwest with their camper. She liked to boast about the fact that she, not he, drove the camping rig the entire 6,000-mile trip. She was a loyal friend to many, a good listener and a caring confidante.
