Obituary of Laurel "Doug" Douglass Russell

Medford and Milo – Laurel Douglass Russell, 88, passed away Sunday evening, August 18th, 2024, at Northern Light Mayo Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. Doug was born at home in Medford, the second son of Romer L. and Olivette (Gourley) Russell. He was predeceased by his parents; first wife; Shirley; and two brothers, Robert and Dwight. Doug is survived by his loving wife, Ethel Ann (Johnson) Russell; three sons, William, Thomas and wife, Betty Jean, and Timothy; one daughter, Belinda Brewer and husband, Darrell; one brother, Wendell, in Connecticut and his family; and one sister-in-law, Kathy, of Milo and her family. Doug was a true Mainer and so are all his offspring. Five grandchildren: Bert Brewer and wife, Nicole, Derek Brewer and wife, Amanda, Andrew Murray and wife, Marissa, Jeremy Russell and wife, Morgan, Cody Dunham and companion, Ryanne. Five great-grandchildren: Kayla Brewer, Wolfgang and Lysander Brewer, and Laurel and Elliot Russell. Doug worked hard all his full life. In early years he trapped the mountains and ponds of all Piscataquis with his father, first by snowshoe, then snowmobile, and finally by plane. He was a certified trapper, Maine Guide, and Master Guide. He graduated from Milo High School and Vaughn Barber School in Connecticut. He worked for a chicken farm during high school. He formed three profitable businesses: a Milo Barber Shop, Russell's Worms (an all-bait business), and in Medford, Russell's Guide Service (for Bear, Deer, and Fishing). He also served five years in the local National Guard during the Korean War with an honorable discharge. Doug was an outstanding and patient man, who loved God, family, friends, and Maine. He surely was a precious soul and we all continue to love him so much. A graveside memorial will be held on Sunday, September 8th at 3PM at Evergreen Cemetery in Milo. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life dinner at 4PM at 25 Hathorn Rd in Medford. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
