Standish - James Sherwood Glasgow, 76, of Standish, Maine, was called to be with his Lord in glory, Sunday, July 14, 2024, while with his wife Brenda at their camp on Caribou Lake.

He was born January 19, 1948, the son of Donald S. and Phyllis B. (Fogg) Glasgow of Kittery, Maine. He attended local schools, graduating from Traip Academy in 1966, and from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute with an AB in oceanography in 1968. He obtained his certification as a scuba diver and served in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, aboard the USS Mt. Mitchell mapping reefs in the Caribbean. In 1971, following in the footsteps of strong family tradition, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served aboard the ammunition carrier, USS Shasta, in the China Sea, Vietnam. He was also married to his beloved wife, Brenda, in that same year.

Following his discharge from the Navy, he completed his degree work at the University of Maine earning a BA in Biology in 1976. He joined the Maine State Department of Environmental Protection in 1978, working as a highly respected environmental specialist, known for his integrity and expertise, retiring in 2013.

James enjoyed the outdoors and loved sharing his appreciation of it with others, especially his family. He traveled widely, fishing, hunting, canoeing, hiking, camping, and teaching those skills to others. He loved and valued his family including them on these adventures. He never missed a ball game or field trip, school event or parade. He enjoyed cooking and reading, growing antique apples, raising Labrador retrievers, and never turned away any of the stray cats who needed a meal and a home. He was truly a lifelong learner, never afraid of tackling and mastering new knowledge, skills, and experiences.

His family, and particularly his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were a source of great joy to him. He treasured opportunities to spend time with them, cooking, reading, teaching his knowledge of the sciences, and sharing his outdoor skills, especially if it included being “upta camp”.

James’s legacy continues on in his family. He will be deeply missed and is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Brenda (Libby) Glasgow; his daughter and his two sons, and their families, daughter, Jennifer and husband, Christopher Carignan, sons, Andrew Glasgow, and Matthew Glasgow and his significant other, Heather; nine grandchildren, James Carignan and wife, Janna, Jacob Carignan and wife, KaHei, Noah Carignan, Jazmine Stillie and husband, Jacob, and Lindsey, Alexander, Issac, Bryce, and Duncan Glasgow, with another granddaughter expected in September; four great-grandchildren, Ezra, Nora, Miles, and Molly Carignan; sister Barbara and her husband William Pike; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held 12 Noon Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the Mount Vernon Road Veterans’ Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, with Pastor Daniel Wray officiating.
