Obituary of Daniel W. Speed Jr.

Dover-Foxcroft- Daniel W. Speed, Jr., 74, passed away July 11, 2024, at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, with family by his side. He was born January 5, 1950, in Bangor, Maine, the son of Frances (Harris) and Daniel Speed Sr. He graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in 1968. Shortly after he graduated, he completed two terms in Vietnam. After returning home he worked as a Union Iron Worker for almost 40 years, for Local #496 and Local #7. Dan was most proud of the life he built with his wife and the raising of their four children. Married nearly 50 years, they built their own home in Dover-Foxcroft with their own two hands and created a beautiful life together. Dan coached local and travel hockey and dedicated himself to his kids and the sports they chose. He spent years of his life sheering sheep, haying the fields, and herding the cattle to help his father-in-law maintain the farm. After overcoming his battle with pancreatic cancer, Dan had a new lease on life and took full advantage of it. He spent his time tinkering in his shop on welding projects, played golf with his sons and brothers, “church” on Sundays, fishing camp with the boys, and many hours volunteering at the ice rink. He had a love of sports (Boston Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and of course the New York Giants), exploring history, and most of all spending quality time with his family and grandchildren. Dan is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Diane Speed; his four children, daughter, Andrea Hunt and her husband, Andrew, son, David Speed and his wife, Kara, daughter, Mary Speed, and son, Daniel Speed and his wife, Kathryn; grandchildren, Harper and Hayden Speed, Corliss DeWitt, and Ellie and Grace Speed; brothers, John, Fred, and Tim Speed, and sister, Rebekah Randall. A graveside funeral with military honors will be held 10AM Friday, July 19, 2024, at the South Dover Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft. Following the funeral, a Celebration of Life will be held at The Piscataquis County Ice Arena, 1049 West Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
