Gorham and Dover-Foxcroft – Victor A. Woodbrey, 94, passed away peacefully July 7, 2024, at his summer residence on Sebec Lake in Dover-Foxcroft. He was born April 12, 1930, in Sebago Lake Village, the son of Victor A. Sr. and Marjorie (McIntire) Woodbrey. Vic grew up in Sebago Lake village with his 10 brothers and sisters. He attended Standish High School where he played both basketball and baseball. As a pitcher, he pitched Standish High School to 4 straight Triple C titles. After graduation, he attended the University of Maine where he continued playing both basketball and baseball. He helped UMaine win the State Series in basketball in 1950 and pitched Maine to the Yankee Conference Baseball Title in 1950. While attending the University of Maine, VIc was also a member of the Phi Mu Delta fraternity, a brotherhood that he remained active in until his passing. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1952, Vic began his teaching and coaching career at Falmouth High School and then moved on to Wilton Academy for 2 years. He then went on to coach baseball and basketball and teach physical education at Lawrence High School. In 1961 when Bonny Eagle High School opened its doors, Vic returned home to teach and coach. Following 4 years at Bonny Eagle, he completed his baseball coaching and teaching careers at Cape Elizabeth High School. He won several Triple C and Western Maine baseball titles as well as 7 state championships. During his coaching career he designed an indoor pitching mound and shared the plans with many other baseball programs in southern Maine. When Vic retired from coaching in 1985, he had compiled a record of 308 wins and 59 losses. During his career as the Athletic Director at Cape, Vic served on the Triple C Athletic Directors Board, the State Principals Association Basketball Committee, and was a member of the National Association of Athletic Directors. In 1985, Vic was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame. Vic and Marie married in 1955 and enjoyed 69 years of marriage before his passing. They had three daughters, 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. In 1960, Vic built a camp on the shores of Sebec Lake where he spent every summer. While at camp, he enjoyed water skiing and fishing, especially fly fishing at Horseshoe Pond. In his later years, Vic became an avid golfer at the Foxcroft Golf Club. He was a member of the Sebec Lake Association and actively supported Foxcroft Academy with his assistance in building their trophy cases. While living in Gorham, Vic was a strong supporter of the University of Southern Maine mens and womens basketball teams, rarely missing a home game; as well as an avid supporter of their baseball team. No matter the weather, Vic could be found at the USM baseball diamond, often with multiple blankets and a thermos of hot chocolate. Additionally, Vic could be found at the many sporting events and performances that his grandchildren participated in. Vic also began a Christmas tree farm at his home in Gorham and thoroughly enjoyed the month of December when families would come to his tree farm to cut down their Christmas trees. Vic was a life long builder and inventor. During the course of his life, he built 3 camps on Sebec Lake and finished a home for one of his daughters. He was also a fine woodworker who prided himself on crafting furniture for family and friends. In addition, he was known for making backhoes and dump trucks for children. His latest invention was a golf tee and golf ball placer which allowed him to continue to play golf in his later years. Above all Vic loved his family, and was proud of all of his children and grandchildren. He loved all holidays that brought his family together. Victor is survived by his wife, Marie (Gerrish) Woodbrey; three daughters, Nancy Neubert and husband, Eric, Judy Ford and husband, Randy, and Beth Johnson and husband, David; nine grandchildren, Kathleen Neubert, Adam Neubert and wife, Kate, and Mitchell Neubert, Nick, Jamie and Christian Ford, Deidra Yeo and husband, Zac, and Denae and Dane Johnson; great-grandson, Emmett Yeo; brother-in-law, Tom Gerrish; sisters-in-law, Ethelyn Treworgy, Connie and Dawn Woodbrey; and nieces and nephews, Julie, Suzanne, Victor, Anne, Mark, Jane, Carol, Brad, Mitchell, Martha, Kevin, Kim, David, Dorrance, Alison, Scott, Holly, Linda, Susan, and Jennifer. He was predeceased by his parents; ten brothers and sisters, Mary, Cecil, Eva, Leonard, Edward, Herbert, Henry, Jim, Mabelle, and Elizabeth; and nieces and nephews, Stephen, Teddy, and Peggy. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Beacon Hospice, Theresa Tibbetts and the 2nd floor staff at Northern Light Mayo Hospital for the kindness, support, and care shown to Vic during his recent illness. A celebration of Victor’s life will be held 5-7PM Thursday, July 11, at the Foxcroft Golf Club, 84 Foxcroft Center Road, Dover-Foxcroft. Visitation for family and friends will be held 4-7PM Monday, July 15, at the Gorham Chapel of Dolby, Blais, & Segee, 76 State Street, Gorham. A memorial service will be held 1PM Tuesday, July 16, at the West Gorham Union Church, 190 Ossipee Trail, Gorham, with Rev. Nate Colson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Southern Maine baseball team in Vic’s memory.
