Obituary of Dorothy Ann (Cole) Ryder

Veazie -Dorothy “Dot” Ryder, 89, died May 14, 2024, in Bangor. She was born January 11, 1935, in Greenville Junction, daughter of Wilber and Emma (Hathaway) Cole. Dorothy was a graduate of Greenville High School and Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Radiologic Technology in Bangor. She was employed by Ross-Loos Medical Center in Englewood, CA, and C.A. Dean Hospital in Greenville as an x-ray technician. Dorothy was a member of the Union Evangelical (UCC) Church in Greenville and Veazie Congregational Church in Veazie. Ralph and Dot were married in Greenville, Maine on December 31, 1956, and moved several times throughout their lives where they met many lifelong friends in Farmington, Bingham, Bethel, Maine; Madison Heights and Grand Rapids, Michigan; then back to Greenville, East Millinocket, Greenville again, and eventually settling in Veazie. One of Dottie’s favorite quotes: “What is it about friendship that makes being among friends so much richer than being among the most accomplished and interesting strangers?” Some of Dorothy’s special moments were spent at camp at Wilson Pond with the children and grandchildren, and her many years of traveling with her husband, Ralph, after his retirement. She is survived by her son, Allan Ryder and Karen of Lancaster, NH; daughter, Kathryn Ryder Andrews and husband, Brent, of Brooksville; grandchildren, Cole Andrews and wife, Casey, Katelyn Ryder and fiancé, Robbie Curtis, Abby Andrews, and Nicholas Ryder and significant other, Erin Welsh; great-grandchildren, Carter Jean Andrews and Malcolm Allan Curtis; sisters-in-law, Sandra, Deana and Betty Ryder, and Melanie Huff Ryder; and niece, Ellie Collins and nephew, Jeff (Cheryl) Collins, as well as many other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Knight Ryder in 2016 ; sister, Charlotte Collins Dickinson in 2023; brothers-in-law, Phil Collins, Lew Dickinson, Wayne Huff, and Charles, Mahlon, John, Edwin, and Howard Ryder; and sisters-in-law, Mary, Virginia, and Frances. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2PM until time of memorial service at 3PM Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Greenville Union Church, with Rev. Joe Schulte officiating. Burial will be at Greenville Cemetery after the memorial service. A reception following the services will be held at the Greenville Masonic Temple.
