Mr. Oakes was truly a class act! He was the epitome of what it meant to be dedicated to family and community. He was an institution at PVHS and he positively influenced so many! I fondly remember taking driver’s ed with him. He made it fun, but approached his role with a seriousness that conveyed the importance of thinking of the safety of others first, emphasizing personal responsibility and caution. I remember him running the clock at countless home games. His accuracy and professionalism were exemplary. He was a role model that we all looked up to. I hadn’t seen him in years, but when I did not too long ago, I was amazed that he had been following my career in Education, and that he made it a point to be complimentary and encouraging. Later, friending him on Facebook allowed for a connection that I have truly valued and appreciated. I feel blessed to have known him. Milo is a better community because of him, and my heartfelt condolences and best wishes go out to my classmate, Karen and her entire family at this difficult time. May the Lord comfort them all, and may the blessings of Walter’s example live on in all of them. He will be greatly missed!

Mr. Oakes, Walter, Eddie.....however you addressed him, he was always a friend. I had him as a science teacher and will always remember what he taught me in drivers' ed. Sitting beside him at the scorers' table for basketball games, in his gym, was a pleasure. His memory will live on. Condolences to his family.

Mr Oakes was an amazing teacher and wanted his students to succeed. I have many memories of him as a teacher and supporter of Penquis Athletics being to voice behind the microphone. One of my favorite memories, prior to having him as a teacher was the Knights of Columbus free throw contest. I was 10 years old and made it to the state finals and seeing Mr Oakes there supporting me through all the stages is a memory I always hold close to my heart. You have impacted so many lives and will be missed by many.

Teresa and I have so many good memories of Eddie - all of which reflect his quick wit, sense of humor, kindness, and deep faith. We like the statement that "he and Nancy were the glue that held the faith community together." They immersed themselves into the many details of parish life and were such good models of service to others. We will miss his smile and his kind service.
Peace,
Deacon Dave and Teresa

Mr. Oakes was one of my most favorite teachers. My favorite class with him was driver’s ed , health class and Hunter safety. He was always a great teacher. One time I was taking a nap in his class and he slammed a book beside my head to jump me and wake me up, it worked. lol. Rest in peace Mr. Oakes you’ll be missed!! I was just talking about you a couple weeks ago with one of my riders.

Mr Oakes (Eddie) was our Biology teacher as well as our Driver education instructor. We were 15 years old. There must be some kind of record set by a man who successfully taught a community of 15 year old kids to successfully drive. He had more patience than Job. That was 60 years ago. He loved the Class of ‘65, and never missed our many reunions. That said, we loved him, too. He will be missed. ❤️

Eddie will be missed by all who knew him. He was a great role model especially for new teachers. He attended so many Penquis events that students could see he cared about them. It's fitting that the HS gym is "Oakes Gymnasium." My sympathy to his whole family.

I am so saddened to hear of Mr. Oakes passing. I became friends first with Nancy when I, as a first year teacher, walked thru the doors of PVHS> Eddie was already a veteran teacher who you could tell everyone looked up to. He was always encouraging and engaging and a great resource for this youngster.
I know that after Nancy passed he was so saddened. It does give one comfort to know that they are once again together.
RIP Mr. Oakes and Peace to all his children and family.

Eddie was a great friend and teacher. Back in his early years of teaching, he taught this baby boomer to drive as he did so many of us back then. In later years he once told me that a lot of people thought we were brothers, you can imagine what he said to that. I will miss him coming to the bean suppers at the legion hall. He was a friend to all he met. Job will done good and faithful servant. Dan and Elbie Nutter
