Obituary of Bertha M. Mitchell

Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft – Bertha M. Mitchell, 99, passed away August 26, 2023, in Orono. She was born June 1, 1924, in Dover-Foxcroft, the daughter of Frank and Marion (Thayer) Tibbetts. She grew up under extremely hard circumstances - no running water, no electricity, and lost her father when she was twelve. Despite that she finished high school at Foxcroft Academy - having to walk over three miles one way through all sorts of weather. She married and raised her family in Dover-Foxcroft at the same time working several jobs, including at the Tannery, Hathaway Shirt Co., and retired from Moosehead Manufacturing. Bertha and her husband, Charles, moved to Hawaii where they lived for several years before moving and living in Hollywood, Florida and finally moving to Bangor, Maine where she lived quite independently until she was over 95. She enjoyed traveling, photography, gardening (especially red roses), painting, writing to pen pals and crafts. Later she spent much of her time knitting, reading and completing puzzles. Bertha was a very strong, hardworking and fiercely independent woman. Her determination, tenacity and toughness kept her very active and long lived. She was also very smart, clever and witty. These were characteristics that made her fun to be with and an enjoyment for her caretakers later at the nursing home. Bertha was truly an exceptional woman and truly exemplary of her generation - the greatest generation. She will be remembered for her resilience, wit and friendly personality. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, and survived by her four children, Larry and wife, Jane, of Yukon, OK; Robert and wife, Anji, of Levant; David and wife, Wanda, of Orono; and Linda (Carter) and husband, John, of Framingham, MA. She leaves three grandchildren, Dr. Renae Zavasky and husband, Scott of Haverhill, MA; Jillian Cookson and husband, Christopher; and Michael and his partner, Danielle, both of Glenburn; a nephew, Dale Tibbetts and wife, Debbie, of Dover Foxcroft; as well as several great grandchildren and cousins. Bertha overcame much adversity and many injuries and Covid, earning her the right and privilege to make it almost to 100 years old. She will be forever missed and thought of with much love and admiration. A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at the family lot in the New Blanchard Cemetery, Blanchard, ME. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
