Sangerville – Carol Ernestine (Starbird) Flagg, 81, passed away peacefully April 16, 2023, at her home. She was born June 10, 1941, in Dexter, the daughter of George and Gardys (Woodside) Starbird. Carol attended Dexter schools and graduated from high school, Class of 1960. Immediately following graduation she started working at Plummer Memorial Hospital in Dexter, where she trained as a CNA. She then went on to work at the Dexter Nursing Home, where she continued her employment until her retirement in 2001. Her many years of caring and compassion for the elderly was a reflection of the kind-hearted woman she was. In 1963, she married Henry Flagg at the Dexter United Methodist Church. A year later, they moved to their new home in South Sangerville where they would live the rest of their days. Carol was a member of the United Methodist Church, an active member of the South Sangerville Grange, and the Piscataquis Pomona, where she received all seven degrees and held many different offices over the years. She was also the Matron of the South Sangerville Junior Grange for 8 years. Carol was an especially talented knitter and many were fortunate to receive handmade items from her such as sweaters, hats, mittens, and socks. Reading, baking, gardening, and canning were also favorites. Carol had an uncanny ability to remember everyone’s birthday and special dates and tuck away bits and pieces of conversations only to recall them at a later date when needed. Carol is survived by her children, Scott Flagg and wife, Barbara, and Shannon Spaulding and husband, Darrell, all of Sangerville; three grandchildren, Shannon Flagg and significant other, Ralph Backman, of Jonesport; Danielle Spaulding and significant other, Drew Dexter, of Waterville, and Brandon Spaulding and significant other, Lexi Farris, of Hartland; two great-grandchildren, Zoey and Cayson Spaulding; Mike and Vicki Johnson and family and Matthew Johnson and family all of North Berwick; Bill and Jess Badger and family of Pittsfield; sister, Shelley Morgan of Sanford and two nieces, Leanne and Brianne; sister-in-law, Helen "Kitty" and husband, Ed Vandenburgh, of Corinna. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Flagg; her parents; grandson, Christopher A. Flagg; nieces, Heather Morgan and Georgeanne Artz; and her long-time special friend, Dot Gower. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to Beacon Hospice and all of their wonderful staff. The care and compassion shown to their mother over the last month will never be forgotten. A graveside committal service for family will be held at 11:30AM on May 21, 2023 at Bailey Cemetery in South Sangerville, with Pastor Marilyn Rohdin officiating. There will be a gathering at the South Sangerville Grange Hall following the service for family and friends to share stories and memories. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation may be made to the Maine Parkinsons Society, 146 Parkway South, Brewer, Maine 04412. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
