Obituary of Marie (Ouellette) Shaffer Swazey

Bradford - Marie (Ouellette) Shaffer Swazey, 93, went home to the Lord, April 3, 2023. She was born in Hamlin, to Patrick and Aurore Ouellette. Marie graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Van Buren and after graduation, attended cosmetology school. She moved to Connecticut in 1958, where she raised her family and also owned and operated several small businesses. Returning to Maine, she and her husband Cliff operated Shaffer’s Greenhouse in LaGrange for many years. In her retirement, Marie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She also had a passion for knitting and crochet work, making items to donate to local charities. In addition to her husband of 39 years, H. Clifford Shaffer, Marie was also predeceased by husband, Leonard Swazey of Milo; brother, Daniel Ouellette; and sisters, Delcia Buchta, Verna Parent, and Robertine Carmichael of Connecticut, Martha Jacobsen of Maine, and Arlene Bower of Ohio. She is survived by brother, John Melvin Ouellette of Connecticut; and sister, Rachel LaPerele of New Hampshire. Marie was the beloved mother of five children; Cheryl Botting of Bradford, with whom she made her home; Charles (Stacy) Shaffer of Sebec, Mary (Jeff)Arrants of Howland, Christine (Steve) Dostie of Leeds, and Martha (Mark) Zakowich of Englewood, FL.; 9 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the hospice team from Northern Light Home Care and Hospice-Penobscot for their dedicated and compassionate care of Marie. She was a communicant of SS. Francis & Paul Catholic Church in Milo. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11AM April 21, 2023, at SS. Francis &Paul Catholic Church, 128 Riverside Street, Milo. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Northern Light Home Care & Hospice, P.O. Box 679, Portland, ME 04104.
