Please share a memory of Ethel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Abbot – Ethel A. Lewis, 84, passed away peacefully January 27, 2023, at home with her dog, Sissy, by her side. Ethel was born February 13, 1938, in Parkman, the daughter of Leland and Velma (Green) Hanscom. Being the ninth child in the family, her dad always called her “his baby”, a name that has stuck to her for her whole life. She loved her childhood on the farm with the animals, especially her pony, Trigger and her dog, Rex. She has shared many of her memories with her family. When Ethel was fifteen, she met and married the love of her life. Hubert and Ethel wed on September 15, 1953, and two days later Hubert left for his army service duty in Germany. He returned home in 1955 to meet his daughter, Vicky. Hubert and Ethel went on to have two sons, Hubert Jr. and Timothy. Hubert and Ethel enjoyed over 60 years of marriage until his passing on March 10, 2014. Ethel worked at Hardwood Products for five years and then at Guilford Industries for 20 years as a mender. She made many friends and loved her job. Her hobbies included raising German Shepherd dogs, gardening and crafting. She spent hours making quilts, needlepointing, making jewelry, and she was famous for her potholders of which she sold hundreds at local craft fairs. She never got rich but totally enjoyed socializing at the craft fairs. She was known as “the potholder lady”. In Mom’s retirement she and Dad did a bit of traveling. They enjoyed Hawaii, South Dakota, Idaho, and many other trips. Mom was very family oriented. She did a family newsletter every year and hosted many Hanscom family reunions. She was always ready to party. Ethel is survived by her children, Victoria Bedard and partner, Jerris Miles, of Guilford, Hubert Lewis, Jr. of Monson, and Timothy Lewis and wife, Dorian, of Boise, ID; her grandchildren, Travis Bedard and fiancée, Laura Childs, of Belgrade, Joseph Bedard and wife, Danielle, of Belgrade, Hunter Lewis of Idaho, Hayden Lewis and wife, Lonnie, of Idaho; great-granddaughters, Ann and Jasmine Bedard, the children of Joseph and Danielle. Ethel is also survived by two sisters, Kay Bemis of Dexter, and Wilma Mueller of Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Charlene Randall, of Bangor; and brothers-in-law, Ralph Lewis of Dover-Foxcroft and Clarence Lewis of Manchester, CT. She leaves numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Hubert Sr.; her siblings, Guvanus Hanscom, Margaret Henderson, Althea Marsh, Richard Hanscom, Emmajean Bryant, Alfreda Conner; and a special son-in-law, Raymond Bedard. Special thanks go out to the Beacon Hospice staff who gave Mom such wonderful care. Special thanks to Pastor Andrew Bermudez of First Baptist Church of Dexter for always being there for Mom. Thank you to all her church family who visited, called and sent cards. It made her very happy. Many thanks to my cousins and friends who sat with Mom when I couldn’t. A memorial service will be held in the spring at the First Baptist Church of Dexter. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
