Obituary of Edwin S. Lindsay
Augusta - Edwin C. Lindsay, 85, died November 15, 2022, at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, where he had been a resident since June of 2015. He was born April 13, 1937, in West Seboeis, which was only accessible at that time by train. He was the last child of Elmer C. and Sarah E. (Fleming) Lindsay.
Edwin was in the last graduating class of LaGrange High School, Class of 1956. He went on to college and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in 1960 from Baptist Bible College in Johnson City, New York. Drafted into the Army in 1960, he served as a Chaplin’s assistant for two years.
Ed would go on to teaching school in Maine, at North Dixmont and Garland, prior to obtaining his Master’s Degree in Guidance Counseling from University of Maine at Orono. Ed then worked as a guidance counselor at Katahdin High School and Limestone High School. He took a year off to teach for a Baptist Mid-Missions School, Portulala Academy, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he enjoyed the year round climate.
After his time in Brazil, he worked as a guidance counselor at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle from 1974-1979. Ed enjoyed his work as the Teacher Placement and Certification Officer for the State of Maine. While living in Augusta, Ed was a deacon for the Augusta Baptist Church. Ed also had a love for good Christian literature and reference books, encouraging others in this area.
Ed had a deep interest in physical fitness and for a short time he worked as a trainer at a Nautilus Fitness Center. He enjoyed weightlifting and was involved with some state weightlifting meets, even as a Master of Ceremonies.
After leaving his state position in 1979, and taking some time off, Ed moved to Gorham, Maine in 1980, where he worked at the University of Southern Maine, overseeing the gymnasium and supervising work study students. He enjoyed his work there with students and staff and remained there until 1996. For a short time there, he also worked in Student Loans. After his work at USM, Ed retired and moved to Augusta in 1996, where he remained until his passing.
Ed’s nieces, Joyce Ashley and Nancy Brown, traveling a distance, would make Ed’s day special by always bringing a good supply of candy and Reny’s chocolate bars for Ed’s sweet tooth.
Two friends of Ed, who were helpful to him in his senior years, were Jim Levesque and Matt Washuk.
Ed is survived by nieces, Jean Johnson and husband, Bruce, of Waite Haven, PA, Joyce Ashley and husband, Stephen, of Northeast Harbor, Nancy Brown of Eddington, and Zita Osgood of Brewer; and nephews, Frederick Lindsay, Jr. of East Millinocket, Richard Lindsay and wife, Patty, of West Enfield, and Mark Lindsay of West Enfield.
Ed was predeceased by his sister, Marjorie Osgood and husband, Arnold; brothers, Earl, and Frederick and wife, Madeline Lindsay; and by his nephew, Robert Osgood.
A sincere thank you goes to the staff of Constellation Hospice for their wonderful care for Ed over these last three years. They made Ed’s life just a little better each step of the way and have really cared for his personal needs. Also, the family and friends of Ed extend a hearty thank you for over seven years of great care to Ed by the staff of the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation. They have been Ed’s second family and have given him such special attention and care every day.
