Obituary of Joan Lucille (Garnett) Owens

Please share a memory of Joan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Brownville Junction and New Gloucester - Joan Lucille (Garnett) Owens, 78, passed away on July 29, 2022, after a long healthcare journey as a transplant patient. Joan was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick to Donald Garnett and Irma (McDowell) Garnett on April 3, 1944. In her early childhood she lived in St. Andrews, N.B. and held very fond memories of her early life there and remained a Canadian citizen throughout her life. When she was ten, she moved to Milo, Maine and then Brownville Junction where she raised her family. When her husband, Johnny, passed away, she moved to New Gloucester to live with her daughter and to be near her grandchildren. She attended Brownville Junction High School and graduated in 1962. She went on to earn her Registered Nursing diploma from the Maine Medical Center School of Nursing in 1965. She worked at the Milo Community Hospital, the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine as a recovery room nurse, and at Mayo Regional Hospital. Joan was an active member of the Milo Nurses’ Guild serving as the president for many years, and when she moved to Southern Maine became an honorary lifetime member; she was part of the infamous Monday Morning Quilters and volunteered at the thrift shop at the Methodist Church in the Junction. She was a founding member of the Brownville Junction High School Alumni Association. Joan loved to bake, and her pies, cakes and breads were made from family recipes passed down from her mother and grandmother. She ensured that her children and grandchildren knew them, too. She baked each of her family members their favorite birthday cake from scratch. She enjoyed quilting, and gave family members her creations, including table runners, quilts, or custom-made pillowcases for each holiday. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She measured her time post-transplant by the years she got to spend with her grandchildren. She is survived by her children Bethany Campbell (Jonathan) of Cumberland, Maine, Christina Owens of New Gloucester, Maine and Jeffrey Owens of Brownville Junction, Maine; her siblings Sandra (Arnold) Pendexter, Leon (Emily) Garnett, Robert (Susan) Garnett; and her very dear grandchildren Evan Campbell and Erin Campbell. She was loved and will be missed by her many nieces and nephews and her constant companions, Grace the Great Dane, and her cat, Lily. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John A. Owens, and her parents Donald and Irma Garnett. Joan was an avid backyard bird watcher and lover of nature. In lieu of flowers, the family invites people to make a donation in her memory to: Maine Audubon, 20 Gilsland Farm Road, Falmouth, Maine 04105 or https://maineaudubon.org/donate A graveside service will be held at Pine Tree Cemetery, in Brownville Junction on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at 11:00 AM with Reverend Michele St. Cyr officiating.
