Obituary of Janet Given Clarke
Palmetto, FL - Janet Given Clarke passed peacefully at her home on Wednesday morning February 9, 2022, with her loving daughter, Katie Given Gleason by her side, after a short and painless illness.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Gladys (Bickmore) Sturgis of Greenville, where she was born and raised. She was predeceased by her sister, Linda Sturgis Kronholm, and her brother, Michael Sturgis. Her reunion with her late husband Charles Oliver Given is a comfort to all.
She is survived by her brother, Lee “Bunky” and sister-in-law, Sandy Sturgis of Florida. Her granddaughter Olivia Lynn Gleason was the center of her world. Countless nieces and nephew as well as family friends who lovingly referred to her as “Ma” or “Grammie Aunt Janet” will miss her, in addition to a special family addition, Summer Shaske.
Janet was THE most welcoming human. Everyone she met was a friend and she cared deeply about them all. There was never a table too full or person turned away from her meals or love. She was known for her comfort dishes like corned beef, stews and scallops. Ma equated food with love. She offered kindness to all those around her and that will be sadly missed most. Her sarcasm, wit and humor kept our spirits together. We set our watch by daily happy hour conversations lined with advice and a good deal of wisdom. To know her was to feel that sense of love and care.
An intimate family gathering will be held in Florida with a formal service taking place this spring in Greenville. Lary Funeral Home will publish arrangements when they are made. In lieu of flowers and cards, the family asks that you consider donating to one of the following non-profit organizations that were important to Jan.
