Obituary of Ronald R. Baker

LaGrange – Ronald R. Baker, 87, husband of the late Alta L. (Herbest) Baker, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home January 25, 2022, surrounded by the full measure of love from his family. He was born May 20, 1934, in Milo, the son of Rainey J. and Nina E. (Wilkins) Baker. He grew up in Milo and LaGrange – always remembering his “old homestead” near the “river of no return” in Milo with childhood stories of going fishing, playing in the fields, and hearing his father calling him home with a blare on the trumpet. He moved to LaGrange at a young age and spent his life there until his passing. He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish and on summer evenings would load up the truck with all the kids around to go swimming at Boyd Lake. He became known as “Trapper” after he retired from his position with the State DOT as he took on trapping beaver and other critters for the state, towns and neighbors. Ronnie belonged to the LaGrange Baptist Church, American Legion Post 41, LaGrange Masonic Lodge, and he served as a volunteer member of the LaGrange Fire Department for 70 years, filling in wherever he was needed. Ronnie started working at a young age as a pulp-juggler and truck driver. He then served during the Korean Conflict as a heavy artillery member of the Army. When he returned from military service he continued work as a woodsman with his dog Ringo and as a truck driver. He retired from the State of Maine Department of Transportation, where he worked on the road and bridge crews. There were many Christmas mornings where he would be sleeping because he had been out plowing for so many hours, only to wake up covered with his presents to open because they would be piled on while he slept. Ronnie is survived by three sons, Joseph Baker and wife, Jennifer, of LaGrange; Glen Wellman and wife, Tina, of Alton; Dennis Wellman and significant other, Minh, of Bangor and three daughters, Renee Wellman of LaGrange; Joanne Smith and husband, David, of Bradford; , and Gayle Decker and husband, Fred, of LaGrange; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Albina Emery and Brenda Herbest; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and numerous friends. In addition to his wife, Alta, he was predeceased by his parents; a son, David Wellman; daughter, Paula Peirce; and two sisters, Helen Gardner, and Lena Gray. Family and friends may visit 5-7PM Thursday, February 3, 2022, at the Lary Funeral Home, Milo, with a Masonic Service at 6:45PM. A funeral service will be held 2PM Friday, February 4, at the Lary Funeral Home, Milo, with Bill Sheppard presiding. Burial will be in the spring in the family lot at HillCrest Cemetery, LaGrange.
