Obituary of Douglas Rideout Lyford
Dover-Foxcroft - Douglas Rideout Lyford, 84, died peacefully at home with his one true love by his side on October 31, 2021. Douglas was born in Atkinson, on June 30, 1937, the son of Byley and Verna (Rideout) Lyford. Growing up, Doug was cared for by many but was especially thankful to the Rideout Family for all their love and kindness while he was in their care. Doug was a 1956 Foxcroft Academy graduate. He proudly served in the United States Army for 3 years and 3 years in the Army Reserves. Following his time in the military, Doug worked several jobs before he and his wife became the owners of the Lyford’s Place Store in Dover-Foxcroft, where they were known to have the coldest beer in town. After the sale of the store, Doug worked for Carquest, retiring in 2001.
Doug and his wife Marlene enjoyed being on the road together, taking trips across the country and exploring the United States. Doug always enjoyed watching sports and was a lifelong New York Yankees fan. Doug especially enjoyed NASCAR and was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan. Doug enjoyed taking his two sons to Dover, Delaware, where they enjoyed several NASCAR races together. When the time came, Doug and his wife happily traveled all around the state of Maine to watch his granddaughter play sports and was always one of her biggest fans.
Perhaps the thing that Doug was most proud of was his family. Although he was never an affectionate ‘I love you’ kind of man, he always showed his family in his own ways just how much he loved and cared for each and every one of them and never allowed any of them to go without. Doug is survived by the love of his life of 60 years, Marlene (Thurston) Lyford; their two sons, Todd Lyford and his wife, Felice, of Brownville, and Tal Lyford of Dover-Foxcroft; grandchildren, Erika Dean and her husband, Jason, of Levant, Zachary Lyford of Dover-Foxcroft, Molly Lyford of Dover-Foxcroft, and Faith Sickler of Brownville. He was also a very proud great-grandfather and Papa to two precious gifts, Joshua Daniel Lyford and Aubrey Lynn Dean. Doug was predeceased by his brother, Byley Lyford and sister, Dorothy (Herring) Kierstead.
