Greenville – Eugene “Gene” F. Murray, Sr., 81, died on December 10, 2021, at Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital. Gene was born September 29, 1940, in Bangor, the eldest son of Dominick and Cecile (Guerrette) Murray. He spent many of his early working years, during and after high school, operating a gravel business with his father, afterwards going to work for Scott Paper Company. Gene had numerous jobs while working 35 plus years for Scott, from driving log trucks to operating harvesters, from working as a forester to a desk job. In 1966 Gene and Henry Madore attended EMT training at Harvard University to receive training which led to his certification and licensure as an EMT. This led to the development of C.A. Dean Ambulance Service. After the ambulance service, the need for a first responder group was identified to assist injured workers in Scott’s working forests. For many years Gene served on the Town of Greenville budget committee, later becoming a Town Selectman, serving as Chair which he was very committed to. Gene was also a Certified Lay Speaker for the UM Church and preached in the Greenville UMC as well as other churches in the region on numerous occasions. He was also a Master Mason and served as treasurer of Columbia Doric Lodge #149 for 22 years. Gene married Judy (daughter of Tom and Lucille Murray) on August 16, 1958. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Although Gene enjoyed working and staying busy, he, Judy and family built a camp in Doughnut Cove on Moosehead Lake in 1970. They enjoyed spending as much time there as possible. Gene is survived by his wife, Judy; their daughters, Jody Gould and Darla Higgins (her husband, Rick); sons, Eugene Jr. “Geno” (and his wife, Ann) and Tom (and his wife, Lisa); his brothers, Donald Murray of Trumansburg, New York, and Victor Murray of Portland, Maine. He was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Thibeau and niece, Angie. One of the joys of his life include his grandchildren, Darla A. Wyman, Joshua Gould, Whitney Peat, Tony, Sam, Sawyer and Tiegan Murray, Alacyn Murray, Sierra Soucy, Dominick Murray and Shannon Gravelle; as well as many great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be announced in the summer of 2022, along with interment at the Greenville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: People’s UMC P.O. Box 91, Greenville Junction, Maine 04442, or Columbia Doric Lodge #149 AF &AM, P.O. Box 141, Greenville Junction Maine 04442. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
