Please share a memory of Juanita to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dover-Foxcroft- Juanita May Cushing, 92, passed away on January 11, 2017, at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. She was the loving wife of John Cushing, to whom she had been married for over 51 years. Juanita was born in Dover-Foxcroft on April 2, 1924. She went to local schools and was a 1942 graduate of Foxcroft Academy. Upon her graduation she began working for C.W. and H.M. Hayes Law Offices, and subsequently worked for McDonald Ford in Dover-Foxcroft. She worked in the finance department at Mayo Memorial Hospital and retired from Dover Lumber Company. She was a volunteer for over thirty years after her retirement at Mayo Regional Hospital and was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Dover-Foxcroft. She was a communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and had been a long-time member of the MOCUTOC Club. In their retirement, she and John traveled across the country in their RV and spent many winters in Fort Meyers, Florida where she stayed active in Kiwanis service. She was particularly proud that she had visited 49 of the 50 United States, missing only Alaska in her travels. In the late 1950s Juanita was a tireless volunteer who was instrumental, with her dear friend Bea Gellerson, in the development and foundation of the Little Red School House in Dover-Foxcroft. Her passion for the unmet needs of young children drove many of her life's achievements. She is survived by her husband, John, of Dover-Foxcroft. She leaves her nephew, Richard Dunham and his wife, Deborah, of Corinth. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Brother William Cushing of the Xaverian Brothers in Kenya, Africa. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers and sister, and her son, Gary. She leaves her godson, Derrick Nutter of Bangor and special family friends and neighbors, Jake and Glenda Smith, Andy and Traci Fowler, Barb and Bob Moore, and Ellen and Dave McDermott of Dover-Foxcroft. A memorial Mass will be held 10AM Wednesday, Jan.18, 2017, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Dover-Foxcroft, with Reverend Emile Dubé presiding. John would like to thank Father Dubé for his visits in Juanita's last days. Donations in Juanita's memory may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Church, PO Box 193, Dexter, Maine 04930 or to Mayo Regional Hospital's Oncology Renovation Fund, 897 West Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine 04426.
