Fred N. Hall died Sunday, June 21, 2026, in Dover-Foxcroft. He was 93, young at heart, and never looked his age. He always loved it when people took note! He was born in Sangerville at home near Lowe's Bridge, the son of Lloyd Hall, Sr. and Marguerite (Knowlton) Hall.

He had many special memories of his childhood with Grampa K (Knowlton) working on his farm in the summers. He attended school in Guilford and later joined the United States Army during the Korean War, serving in the engineering division with the rank of corporal.

After returning home from military service, Fred married the love of his life, Louise. He always loved telling the story of first seeing the auburn-haired beauty in high school and declaring that he was going to marry her.

Fred began his career at Guilford Industries, where he started in weaving and eventually became a cloth designer. He later served as manager of French & Curtis Oil and then as general manager of several Chase & Kimball Oil Company/Webber Oil locations in Piscataquis County.

He retired in 1993 and opened the door for some fun! He and "Mum," as he affectionately called Louise, loved camping, company trips, cruises, and especially Aruba, where they returned year after year, often with their daughters. Together they built a camp on Piper Pond that eventually became their permanent home. It was a place filled with family gatherings, campfires, tubing, swimming, fireworks, good food, card games, and years of wonderful memories. For many years, they hosted the annual Hall Family Reunion. There was almost always a game of cribbage in progress at “camp” and Fred especially enjoyed playing "nickels."

An excellent woodworker and carpenter, Fred crafted furniture for his home and family. He became something of a legend for his handmade cribbage boards, and there are few family and friends who do not own one of his beautiful creations. After retirement, he and his brothers, Dick and Dwinal, worked together as carpenters.

Fred was a proud 50-year member of Mount Kineo Lodge #109 in Guilford and a member of Anah Shrine in Bangor. He was equally proud of his service with the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department, serving as chief for five years beginning in 1969. Through his dedication and leadership, he served his community and took great pride in helping others.

To say Fred was a joker would be an understatement! He loved making people laugh, and his humor was infectious. Whether telling a favorite joke for the first time or the tenth, the twinkle in his eye made it clear that he was enjoying every minute of it. An entertainer at heart, his quick wit and playful spirit brought joy to many over the years

Fred's greatest joy was his family including his daughter Cindy Witt, husband Ryan, Cindy’s daughter Carrie Clukey, her son Logan and daughter Grace, and her husband Danny; Cindy’s daughter Brina Stairs, her husband, Shaun, and their daughters, Ava and Ellie; his daughter Sherry Smith, her son Brandon Smith and his children, Hailey and Ryan; and Sherry’s son Cameron Smith, his wife, Mandie, and their daughter, Alinea. Together, he and Mum also created many memories with nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends over the years, including Larry and Nancy Glidden.

When Fred and Louise got new neighbors at Piper Pond many years ago, they gained dear friends Doug and Lorraine Wark. They were like family. Their friendship was filled with happy hours, cribbage games, laughter, and love.

He held a special place in his heart for his nephew Wes and his wife, Gale, who were always stopping by with lunch and a game of cribbage. Fred was also deeply appreciative of his son-in-law Ryan, whose help maintaining his home meant so much when he couldn't.

Fred was predeceased by his wife, Louise. He loved her deeply and cared for her devotedly when she needed it most. He was also predeceased by his brothers Richard, Lloyd, and Dwinal, his sister Carolyn, his brother Dallas Patterson and his sister Ione (Patterson) Wilson. He is survived by brothers Dennis and Rogan "Pat” Patterson.

Fred will be remembered for his humor, his craftsmanship, his love of family and friends, and the countless memories he created with those he loved.

He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026 from 12-3 pm, at the Mount Kineo Masonic Lodge on Hudson Avenue in Guilford.
