Brownville Junction – Norman Eugene Whitten, 76, passed away peacefully December 27, 2025, at his home, making his last journey reuniting him with his “keeper of the stars”, his wife, Mary. He was born May 25, 1949, in Milo, the son of Richard L. and Ellen (McGrath) Whitten. Norman proudly served the United States Army in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 92 in Brownville. Norman was a foreman at Dexter Shoe for over 30 years and enjoyed 12 years working at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor.
Norman is survived by his son, Raymond Stanhope and his wife, Tricia; two grandchildren, Ashley Paul and her husband, Dustin, and Joshua Stanhope; two brothers, Harold and Willis Whitten; special nephew, Bill; and his special Harem. He was predeceased by his parents, and loving wife, Mary (Fish) Whitten.
Norman says, “It’s been a long journey, but a hell of a good ride. The horse is in the pasture; my butt is on the ground. Time for someone else to take the reins.”
A graveside service with military honors will be held 1PM Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the family lot in the Evergreen Cemetery, Milo. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Legion Post 92, or to the Brownville Community Church. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
