Jackman - Lane Linda McIver Chamberlain, 79, loving wife of Deane M. Chamberlain, died peacefully on December 9, 2025 at the Greenville Charles A. Dean Nursing Home surrounded by her husband, good friend Gladys, and several caring staff nurses. Lane was born April 20, 1946 in Greenville, Maine, the daughter of the late William F. and Ethel (Cole) McIver, and sister of the late Franklin C. McIver. She was known to most people as “Lanie” throughout her lifetime.
Lane attended Greenville Consolidated School, graduating as class valedictorian in 1964. She earned a BA in history from the University of Maine, Orono in 1968, and an M. Ed. degree in 1972.
Lane married Deane M. Chamberlain on August 22, 1971, which was also the 30th anniversary of her parents’ marriage.
Lane began her teaching career at the junior high level in Alton and then Exeter, NH. In 1974 she and Deane relocated to Jackman, ME where she taught at Forest Hills Consolidated School until her retirement in 2002. Most of Lane’s years of teaching were at the middle level, grades 5-8, although she worked in special education K-12 for a number of years and also taught kindergarten. She taught social studies and language arts to generations of middle schoolers and was recognized as an excellent English teacher. Lane frequently came out of retirement to assume various roles in the special ed. Department when specialized instruction or long-term teacher replacement was needed.
In addition to her long teaching career, Lane was active in community service. She was a member of the Moose River Congregational Church, serving as clerk for many years. She was also a member of Wm. B. Doughty VFW Auxiliary #5723, serving as its secretary. She was very active in the Jackman-Moose River Historical Society, working to secure grant money and establish its museum. Lane was a trained volunteer with Hospice of Somerset County and a member of the Eastern Star, and she enjoyed Moose River Valley Senior Center activities, and crafted and stitched with the Mountain Quilters.
Lane loved flowers and gardening. Her perennial garden and array of old fashioned rosebushes were admired by neighbors and passers-by alike. She played the piano and was known for her beautiful soprano singing voice. Spending time at the family camp on Wilson Pond was the source of many enjoyable memories for Lane and her family.
Lane is survived by her husband, Deane, of fifty-four years; a daughter, Jane K. Chamberlain and grandsons, Kylian and Matyas of Appleton, ME; a son, Forrest A. Chamberlain and wife, Stacey of California; sister-in-law, Linda McIver of Shawmut, ME; brothers-in-law, Eric B. Chamberlain and wife, Deborah, and Keith A. A memorial service will be held in spring or early summer 2026 at the Moose River Congregational Church in Jackman, date and time to be announced. A gathering for remembrance and refreshments will follow at the American Legion Hall in Jackman. Burial will be in the McIver family plot in Greenville.
