Obituary of Kenneth Menzer Sampson

Parkman – Kenneth Menzer Sampson, 91, died May 10, 2025, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor. He was born August 3, 1933, in Abbot, the son of Menzer and Ethel (Jones) Sampson. He graduated from Guilford High School in 1951. Shortly after, Ken joined the United States Air Force where he had a 22-year career and retired as Master Sergeant. He was married to Rosalee McClure and together they had one son, Eric Sampson. Ken was predeceased by both. Ken was deployed to Asia during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. When not deployed, he and his family lived primarily in Virginia. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, Ken returned to Parkman for the next chapter of his life. He and Rose purchased the Keg Tavern in Abbot. Together they transformed it into the Wagon Wheel Restaurant and Lounge, a successful eatery and dance hall. The restaurant was “home of the big plate” and the dance hall became incredibly popular. Ken hired some of Maine’s top country and western bands to perform there nearly every weekend of the year for more than 30 years. Patrons came from across the state to enjoy some fine food and music, kick up their heels and have an all-around great time. Ken was never known for his smile or cheery disposition. But his friends knew that beneath that crusty exterior was a man of conviction, a man with a big, kind heart. He always treated his friends well and he was extremely generous. He was quietly there for many people who he cared about, and he would often help people who were down on their luck. Whether it was paying to repair someone’s car, buying a struggling family a tank of oil, or mowing a law for someone in ill health, Ken was frequently there. He did not need to be asked for help, nor did he need thanks or recognition afterwards. He just did it. Ken’s lifelong passions were clear…fly fishing for brook trout and hunting for partridge. He was very accomplished at both. He made many trips to Newfoundland and Alaska to fly fish. But he loved fishing in the local area just as much. He had modified several RV’s over the years for northern Maine bird hunting trips. In October, Ken could be found in northern Maine at Red Pine hunting partridge and tending the camper wood stove. His trusty bird dog would always be at his side. A memorial graveside service will be held 1PM Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Jackman Corner Cemetery, Sangerville. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
