SHIRLEY -- Charles G. “Chuck” Crossman, 77, of Blanchard Road left this world on Friday April 4th, 2025, after a period of declining health. He passed comfortably surrounded by those he loved, at his home away from home in Englewood Florida. Chuck was born in Greenville on February 10th, 1948, the eldest son of Lloyd and Vella (Ryder) Crossman. Chuck attended school in Greenville and started dating the love of his life Betty in high school. After high school, Chuck enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, training at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune before being deployed to serve in the Vietnam War. Chuck was very proud of his Marine Corps heritage, and you didn’t often see him without one of his Marine Corps or Vietnam Veteran hats. Chuck and Betty were married on September 26, 1970, and welcomed their only child, Lyn, in 1971. During this time, Chuck went to work as a heavy equipment operator with IUOE Local 4, working on various sites across the state alongside his Grandfather Win Ryder and Uncle Bub Ryder. He ran a forestry business for several years and returned to Local 4 in the 90’s where he worked until his retirement in 2005. Chuck was a jack of all trades, and contrary to the saying, he was a master of them all. He was a meticulous craftsman and would settle for nothing less than perfection in any of his projects. Though this often took more time, you could rest assured that anything he built or any home improvement projects he helped with would be flawless. One of his greatest accomplishments was building his home on the Blanchard Road from breaking ground, designing the floor plan and carrying out construction and all the way to completion. Chuck's favorite hobbies included hunting on his property, fishing with lifelong friends at Indian Pond, foraging for mushrooms, and golfing with cherished friends at both Piscataquis Country Club in Guilford and the many courses in and around Englewood Florida. Chuck took great pride in his family, he was always more like a father figure than a grandfather to his oldest granddaughters, Lorryn and Courtney. When Cooper was born he was so excited to finally have a boy after a daughter and two granddaughters, he enjoyed traveling to Pittsfield to watch Cooper play football throughout the years. He had a special bond with his eldest great-grandson Carson, they loved to fish together, hit golf balls in the yard, and Carson was the only one to inherit his love of Moxie. Vella and Anderson always kept him laughing, all three of them loved Bumpas tractor rides. Chuck is survived by his loving companion of over 60 years, Betty Crossman of Shirley; his only daughter, Lyn Lary and her husband, Dan, and grandson, Cooper, all of Pittsfield; granddaughter, Lorryn Johnson and husband, William, and great-grandchildren, Carson, Vella and Anderson, all of Waterville; granddaughter, Courtney Padgett and partner, Jack of Augusta; brothers, Brian Crossman and wife, Jana, and John Crossman and wife, Barbara, all of Greenville; brother-in-law, David Bradford of Greenville; sisters-in-law, Susan Drinkwater and husband, Ken of Greenville, and Bea Abele and husband, Jim of New Hampshire; a special cousin Michael Ryder and his wife Megan, and his Aunt Donna of Levant; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear and lifelong friends. Chuck will be remembered for his strength, courage and resilience, his quick wit and sense of humor, along with his compassionate heart and love and loyalty to his family and friends. A celebration of life reception will take place at Bartley Events Center in Greenville on Saturday May 17th from 1-3pm. Family and friends are welcome to come and share their favorite memories.
