Obituary of Daniel William McGarry
Parkman - Daniel William McGarry, 67, passed away on February 25, 2025, at Northern Light Mayo Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, due to complications from pneumonia and end-stage obstructive pulmonary disease. He was born on August 5, 1957, in Indianapolis, Indiana the son of Robert E. and Virginia McGarry and was raised Catholic.
Daniel graduated from Lakewood Senior High School, Lakewood, CA in 1975 and studied at California State University, Long Beach. From an early age, his curiosity and ingenuity were evident. As a Boy Scout, he self-designed and built a championship soapbox racer cart out of an old wagon and wheelbarrow parts.
In high school, he rebuilt a 1956 Chevy and raised sea slugs in a saltwater tank in his bedroom for a marine biology project—both early signs of his lifelong love for craftsmanship and the natural world.
Daniel dedicated himself to meaningful work in many fields. He was a camp counselor for the Crippled Children’s Society and later worked with at-risk youth near Algonquin Provincial Park. In the early 1980s, he learned the art of building prosthetic limbs from his uncle Pat, carrying forward a family tradition of helping others regain mobility. In Canada, he built beautifully crafted wooden screen doors in Coboconk and worked on prototype modeling in Toronto. He was a skilled carpenter, mechanic, and tinkerer, never afraid to get his hands dirty to bring an idea to life.
Dan loved vintage cars and their simplicity and beauty of operation. He thought the Model T was the best vehicle ever invented. His love for machines was matched by his love for the land. As a Jeep enthusiast, he found joy in off-road adventures, embracing the thrill of exploration from the California Glamis Sand Dunes to the Maine Northwoods. But his deepest connection was to the land itself.
In Parkman, Maine, he planted a small-scale orchard, hoping it would bear fruit for generations to come. His love for gardening reflected his belief in creating a legacy not of wealth, but of nourishment—for people, for wildlife, and for the planet. He shared his life of deep curiosity, skilled hands, and an abiding love for the simple, enduring things—well-built machines, well-tended trees, community support and the peace of the woods he called home.
Daniel was a loving son, brother, and uncle. He will be deeply missed and forever held in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind his beloved cats, Malkin and Little Kat. He is survived by his brother, Robert (Bob) McGarry; his sisters, Janice Pezzoli and Patricia (Patty) Caldwell; two nephews; four nieces; three grandnephews; and two grandnieces. He was predeceased by his father, Robert E. McGarry, his mother, Virginia R. McGarry, and his sister, Kathleen McGarry.
