Obituary of Woodrouffe "Tony" Lambert Bartley Jr.

Greenville – Woodrouffe “Tony” Lambert Bartley Jr., 93, passed away February 13, 2025, at his home. He was born February 15, 1931, in Greenville, the son of Hilda Mae (Smith) and Woodrouffe Lambert Bartley Sr. Tony was born and raised in Greenville and lived there most of his life. As a small child, he spent two years in Brunswick when his father worked at BIW. He also lived in New Jersey for two years with Pinkie when he was in the Army. Greenville, however, was always home and where he wanted to be. After attaining his business degree at the University of Maine, he returned to Greenville where he worked with his father and grandfather in the family business. It was here he stayed until his retirement in 1997. While the family business was his vocation, cooking and feeding people was his passion. If Tony wasn’t in the oil truck delivering oil all across the Greater Moosehead region, he was likely in the kitchen cooking for some organization or event: Masonic Lodge benefit dinners, Ready Workers community meals, annual holiday parties for business customers, golfers lunches at the annual Grapevine tournament, pre-graduation picnics on the Bartley-Wortman beach for the high school graduating classes, or serving as King Chocolate with his chocolate fountain at the Moosehead Chocolate Festival! Tony was a very civic-minded and strong supporter of the Greenville area. Just after high school, he and some of his classmates created the Grapevine Association whose goal was to provide a post-secondary scholarship opportunity for 2-4 graduating high school seniors. The scholarship awards started in 1966 and still continue today. When the B52 crashed on Elephant Mtn. in 1963, Tony was one of the locals who helped at the site. He found the wallet of one of the servicemen and took it upon himself to get it returned to his wife. He also worked with other local businessmen to help create and run the local ski area. He served on numerous town committees and boards including the Historical Society, the Moosehead Marine Museum, and the C.A. Dean Hospital. In 1995 he was elected as one of the Piscataquis County Commissioners where he served for three terms until he retired in 2006. It was a position and service he truly enjoyed. Although Greenville was home, Tony loved to travel! In the early 60s, he packed his family onto the train and headed out across the country to visit family on the West Coast. By the late 70s, that changed to loading the car and heading south in the spring - exploring the East Coast and usually ending up at Disney World. Disney World was often the family destination and his last trip was in 2018. Another favorite destination was Prince Edward Island, Canada. Yearly family camping trips to PEI, created many special memories and connections that continue through the generations. He also enjoyed the many trips he earned through Webber Oil: Hawaii, Austria, Aruba, and many cruises around the Caribbean. His favorite place, however, was to travel the 5 miles north to his cherished camp on Harford’s Point. Tony is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Rowena “Pinkie” (Trenholm) Bartley; four children, Sue McNulty, Woodie Bartley III and his wife, Lisa, Elaine Bartley, and Diane Bartley and her husband, Joe; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Ian McNulty and his wife, Jen, and their children, Simon, Natalie, and Liam, Ryan McNulty and his wife, Mary Faith, and their children, Penny and Reed, Michaella Lavigne and her husband, Scott, and their children, Olive and Lambert, and Bethany Pollock and her husband, Brandon, and their daughter, Brooke; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Diane Roberts. The family wishes to thank the ER staff at CA Dean Hospital and Anna Babiarz, PA who were of significant help over the last few months and kept “Care” in healthcare. We also want to say a special thank you to Heidi, Amery, Rachel, and many others who assisted with the home health care and support that allowed Tony to stay at home and enjoy being with family and friends. While we will miss him every day, we are so thankful that he was able to leave us on his terms. Services will be announced at a later time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grapevine Association, ℅ Charles Carter, PO Box 1162, Greenville, ME 04441. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life and Masonic Service will be held next summer. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
