Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Milo - David M. McLaughlin, 69, husband of the late Dawn (Nicholson) McLaughlin, passed away February 6, 2016, at a Bangor hospital. He was born December 10, 1946, in Lincoln, the son of Roger and Delilah (Ward) McLaughlin. David was an avid outdoorsman and loved to bring family and friends to his 'secret' fishing hole at Hathorn Pond each Spring in early thaw to fish the best tasting trout in the area. There were many a hikes into Hathorn with his son, Davey, son-in-law, Scott, son, Joseph and buddy, Butch. Hathorn was a place they could go to be free of the outside world, share inside jokes and laugh loud and deep into the night. His love for the outdoors did not stop at fishing. David loved to hunt, camp and hike as well, and he did so right up until his health dictated otherwise in the last couple of years. David's second love was tending to his gardens and canning and pickling. To our family, there was no better pickle than Grampy's mustard dills and no better jam than his strawberry rhubarb. David would can everything from the garden and nothing ever went to waste. His love of canning and thoughtfulness for others went so far as to perfect a sugar free recipe of his jam for his diabetic friends and family. Although he was quiet and reserved, David was immensely thoughtful and gracious. He contributed to so many charitable organizations and was especially gracious with Veteran and children's charities. Even when he had nothing much to give, he would find a way to give - often times denying himself of necessities in order to do so. He found eternal happiness in recent years, giving his heart and soul to his Lord and becoming a born-again Christian. David worshiped his God, studied his Bible and prayed with his Pastor and best friend, Isaiah Hill. He found himself in the workings of the Lord and rejoiced in this. He became whole in his readings and worship. His attention to detail and meticulousness knew no boundaries – from cataloging his coin and stamp collections, to folding his laundry, balancing his checkbook, listing birthdays, filing mail, taking names of nurses who gave him good service, and saving mementos and newspaper clippings of his loved one's special moments in time. David was so very proud of his children and grandchildren and he would preserve everything given to him by them. It was always the little things you think would not mean much that he would hold onto the longest. David wed his high school sweetheart, Dawn when they were both young teenagers. They struggled through and worked to make a better life for their children. As a logger, he was an owner/operator for periods of time and he was never beneath working as a migrant worker to pick potatoes or rake blueberries to make ends meet and care for not only his family, but he would quietly take in others in need and give them a safe place to stay. His quiet compassion truly knew no boundaries and he never asked for anything in return. David is survived by one son, Joseph McLaughlin and his wife, Lori; one daughter, Charity Rudge and her husband, Scott; two brothers, Elliott and Roger McLaughlin; four sisters, Evelynn Suitter, Judy Pelkey, Barbara Hayes, and Suellen McMannus; eight grandchildren, Nichole (Rudge) LeClair, Adam McLaughlin, Ryan McLaughlin, Jesse McLaughlin, Courtney (Rudge) Garrett, Brooke McLaughlin, Gage McLaughlin, and Riley Richard; and four great-grandchildren, Lexxi LeClair, Karlye McLaughlin, David McLaughlin, and Mason Farrar. In addition to his loving wife, Dawn, David was predeceased by a son, David C. McLaughlin, and a brother, Anthony McLaughlin. Friends are invited to call from noon until time of funeral service at 2pm Saturday, February 13, 2016, at the Sebec Corner Baptist Church, with Pastor Isaiah Hill officiating. Burial in the family lot in the Grindstone Cemetery, Medway, will be held in the Spring. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
